Thank you so much for all your help with the transaction and friendly service. Heather in New South Wales, Australia 4/2/07Dear Gary, I received the Shimano Curado 200 DHSV yesterday. Thanks for getting that done so quickly. I fished the new reels hard yesterday and caught quite a few fish. As much as I love the new Shimano Calais 200DC, what an amazing reel, I do wish they had put it out in the slower 5:1 or even a 6:1. I assume they figured that, with such long casts, they needed a way to get it back to the boat quickly. But I caught bass yesterday on spinnerbaits, crankbaits, senkos, and rat-l-traps. Everything retrieved well except spinnerbaits and big cranks. The 7:1 is just too fast, creating too much resistance, and wears your wrist out. Even slowing it down, you just don’t have the torque the slower ratio provides. I found the same thing when fighting fish back to the boat (I caught three between 4-7 pounds yesterday). The bigger the fish, the more you miss the slower ratio. It was awesome for bulging spinnerbaits, burning buzzbaits, and ripping lipless cranks. It was also tremendous when you have an area of spooky fish you are targeting far off and need to get the bait back to the boat for another cast quickly once you are out of the zone. But it emphasized the need for a more forgiving rod (slower tip or fiberglass) when fishing it with cranks. I had several good fish come unbuttoned that I believe I normally would have landed. I just don’t think they got as much hook as they would have had I been using the slower reel. A 7:1 retrieve would never be the reel for a guy who mainly fishes one rod/reel combo. To me, it seems more application specific and less flexible for general fishing conditions. Now, I know that people buying Shimano Calias DC’s are almost never going to be one-reel people. But my son doesn’t have the deck full of reels I do and I think he may well opt for the slower Shimano Curado as a result of yesterday’s real-world tests. Anyway, I know you don’t design the reels, but I assumed you occasionally give advice and thought the feedback might be valuable to you. Thanks for your GREAT customer service and excellent prices. My left hand is partially disabled which makes it hard for me to bring line in.
